For Donna Hughes, caring for others is more than a profession — it's a lifelong calling. As owner of Essential Care, Hughes has spent years helping older adults throughout the Bay Area remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their own homes. Whether assisting with daily routines, providing companionship, or supporting clients recovering from surgery, her mission is rooted in one simple belief: every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and above all compassion. Kickstarting her career as a United Kingdom-registered nurse, Hughes has worked in healthcare for the majority of her life. Her passion for caregiving first sparked at the young age of 12 when a district nurse treating her grandmother's leg wound allowed her to assist with dressing changes. From that point on — well, the rest is history. “I decided at 12 years old, that’s all I wanted to do. I wanted to be a nurse,” she said. "So against my mother's wishes, I became one." After relocating to the Bay Area, Hughes continued pursuing her passion for caregiving. She joined Essential Care in 2014 and became the franchise owner in 2016. Today, Essential Care provides assistance with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders, laundry, transportation, mobility assistance, light housekeeping, toileting, and safety monitoring. The company also provides short-term support for individuals recovering from surgery and works closely with clients receiving hospice services.
For Hughes, one of the most important aspects of the business is helping to preserve an aspect many clients’ are keen on maintaining – independence. "We strive to have them remain as independent as possible,” she said, for her — maintaining that is “100 percent” important. That commitment often extends beyond basic caregiving. Hughes and her team work with clients to rebuild strength after falls, encourage proper nutrition, and help individuals regain mobility and confidence. “Sometimes they may have had a fall and you know, they’re struggling to get their mobility back,” she said, “So we will work very hard to get them back to being as independent as possible by working with them every day on strengthening muscles, walking, good nutrition — all of those things.” The company's services have become especially valuable for older adults who wish to age in place while continuing to participate in their communities. Hughes encourages clients to remain active, whether that means attending local events, taking daily walks, or simply enjoying time outdoors. "We like to get people outside," she said. "Even if they're in a wheelchair, it's beneficial." While Hughes' nursing background helped shape her career, a deeply personal experience strengthened her commitment to providing truly exceptional care. Years ago, her mother, who suffered from dementia in England, experienced abuse while living in a care facility. After her mother’s passing due to two brain bleeds, the incident led to a coroner’s report, police investigation, and court proceedings. The experience left a lasting impact. "It's my goal to make sure people are looked after with dignity, respect, and love," Hughes said. "Each of my clients are to be treated the way I would have wanted my mum to be treated." “That’s why I’m in this industry — to make a difference,” she added. That philosophy has become a defining characteristic of Essential Care. Hughes frequently advocates for clients, attending medical appointments when requested and helping families navigate difficult healthcare decisions. In the past, when she has asked people, in their experience, what sets Essential Care apart, she has received generally the same response: because of her strong advocacy for clients. points to the personal relationships she develops with clients and their families. "Essentially they say, ‘It’s because you’re at the helm,’” she said. “I’ll go to doctor’s appointments, if desired, and advocate — fight for them.” Beyond one-on-one care, Hughes also enjoys creating opportunities for social connection within the communities she serves. Essential Care occasionally hosts activities such as "Name That Tune" events, using music to spark memories, encourage engagement, and bring residents together. "I fully believe that music brings people to life and it inspires memories," she said, encouraging residents to keep an eye out for similar community-oriented activities in the near future. As Essential Care continues serving older adults throughout the Bay Area, Hughes remains focused on the same goal that first inspired her decades ago: making a meaningful difference in people's lives. "There isn't one thing that I can imagine doing other than this," she said.
